2015 Fall Recruitment FlierThe Discovery Museum / Powerhouse Science Center is seeking its 2015 cohort of Science Communications Fellows. Linked with the Portal to the Public National Network, this fellowship trains scientists, engineers, graduate students, researchers, and other science-based professionals in the craft of public science outreach.

Participants take part in three workshops over the course of three months, learning the importance of informal science education, how people learn, facilitation skills and activity development to design their own tabletop exhibit.

Applications are due September 4th. Contact CapSciComm colleague Sheila Montgomery (; (916) 808-3942) for more details and application form.

Save the date for the September 2nd Lodi “Science Night Live!” Our colleague Candace Spier Bever will be sharing some alpaca secrets with us—and explain how studying the chemistry of alpacas is leading to new medical tools for humans!

The Public Relations Society of America – California Capital Chapter is seeking nominations for their 2015 Influence Awards. If you know a colleague worthy of recognition, or recent work that should lauded, submit entries by August 28th… is seeking a science writer for their Washington, D.C. office…

The Sac-Shasta Chapter of The Wildlife Society will be hosting their Natural Resources Symposium in Camp Pollock on October 28th…

Congratulations to our friends at Cap City Blogger Network for their first-ever networking meetup! This new community for bloggers in the Greater Sacramento Region was co-founded by CapSciComm colleague Kelly Rathburn Conroy, Education Programs Manager at the Sacramento Tree Foundation. Ben Young Landis was in attendance, representing CapSciComm.

The network is open to any hobby or professional bloggers in our region, so all you science bloggers should join up! Stay tuned for upcoming events and gatherings via @CapCityBloggers and on Facebook at!

ICYMI, check out the CapSciComm update in the Summer 2015 issue of ScienceWriters magazine. To help commemorate us entering our third year of operations, we shared our mission and vision again in the latest “Regional Groups” roundup in ScienceWriters, the membership magazine of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW). It’s our way of reminding colleagues from around the nation that “we’re here, and we’re keeping science spicy!”

Finally, one more shout out to recent Sacramento Bee science intern Katie Strong. Read this blogpost to learn more about the AAAS Mass Media Fellowship program that brought her to Sacramento.

Keep Science Spicy!
